How Much Protein Does a Man Over 50 Need to Build Muscle?

Decision rule

There is no single number proven specifically for every healthy man in his fifties. A practical target is to first meet total energy needs and distribute protein-rich foods across meals. Guidance of roughly 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day is aimed mainly at adults over 65, with higher amounts often suggested for active older adults [1].
A man in his fifties prepares a protein-rich meal with salmon, beans, and vegetables.

Do not present an over-65 consensus number as a precise requirement for a 50-year-old. Training, body size, food intake, kidney function, illness, and weight-loss goals all change the useful range [1].

Start with meals

Build each meal around a recognizable protein source: eggs, dairy, fish, poultry, lean meat, soy, beans, or lentils. Spreading intake is usually easier than rescuing a low-protein day at dinner.

Use body weight carefully

Per-kilogram targets become less intuitive at high body weights and during weight loss. A dietitian can set an appropriate reference weight when a generic calculation is misleading.

Know when advice changes

Kidney disease, acute illness, poor appetite, and prescribed diets require individualized guidance. More protein is not a substitute for resistance training.
