How Heavy Should Men Over 50 Lift?

Decision rule

There is no age-based weight. Start with a load you can control through a comfortable range while finishing each set with roughly two to four technically good repetitions still possible. Increase the load only after the planned reps are repeatable and symptom-free [1].
A man in his fifties selects a moderate dumbbell from a gym rack.

Heavy and light are relative to the person and exercise. ACSM reports that a broad range of loads can improve strength and muscle; heavier work becomes more specific when maximal strength is the goal [1].

Use technique as the first limiter

The correct load lets you keep the same range, tempo, and joint position from the first rep to the last. If you shorten the movement or hold your breath involuntarily, reduce it.

Progress in small jumps

Machines may allow five-pound changes; dumbbells may force larger jumps. Add repetitions before load when the next increment is too large.

Testing is optional

A one-repetition maximum is not needed to begin. Submaximal sets provide enough information to train and are easier to repeat consistently.
