Is Creatine Safe and Effective for Men Over 50?

Safety first

Creatine monohydrate can modestly improve lean mass and some strength outcomes when combined with resistance training in older adults, but it's optional. Trials include mixed populations rather than a guarantee for every man over 50. Kidney disease, medication concerns, or unexplained symptoms warrant clinical advice first [1].

A meta-analysis of 22 studies found greater gains in lean tissue and chest- and leg-press strength with creatine plus training than with training alone [1]. That doesn't make loading phases, expensive blends, or supplement use necessary.

Choose the studied form

Creatine monohydrate is the standard studied form. A consistent small daily dose is simpler than cycling; product labels and clinician guidance should take priority over internet protocols.

Expect water-weight change

Creatine can increase body water and scale weight. That's not the same as fat gain and shouldn't be mistaken for immediate new muscle.

Treat it as an add-on

Training, food, sleep, and adherence create most of the result. Add creatine only after the basic program is stable and you understand why you're taking it.
