  2. How low should you actually go?

    For low bar, depth is hip crease below the top of your knee. That's the powerlifting standard, and it's a reasonable target. Go deeper if your pelvis stays neutral. When your butt tucks under, you've hit bottom early. Film a set from the side. Don't trust what the mirror says. If your lower back rounds before parallel, cut depth until you can hold position.

    Start the ascent by pushing your feet outward like you're trying to part the floor. That's not a mental image; it physically turns on your adductors and glutes. Common Mistakes

  • Mistake

    Why

    With no shelf, you'll push through your hands and end up with sore elbows and a bar that slides down your back mid-set.

    Grip the bar narrow enough that your wrists are neutral, then pull your shoulder blades together and down. The bar should rest on your back, not your palms.

    Folding forward at the bottom until the squat turns into a good morning.
    Why
    If your hips shoot up first and your chest stays down, the bar drifts forward of midfoot and your lower back takes the brunt. You'll strain your spine and the bar will end up in front of your toes.
    Fix
    At the bottom, keep your chest over your midfoot and brace your core. Think 'hips up and chest up' at the same time on the way out of the hole.
