Why start with a single kettlebell?
You don't need a rack of bells. Pick one weight that challenges your swing for 5 sets of 10. For most men that's 24 kg, for most women 16 kg. A single bell forces you to get good at the movement before you go heavier. That's the whole point.
Master the hinge before you swing
The swing hinges at the hips, not the spine. Stand with feet shoulder-width, bell a foot in front. Hinge back until your shins are vertical, then snap your hips forward. Your arms are just ropes. The bell floats chest-high. Do not squat it - that's a different movement.
How do you progress load and volume?
Add reps until you can do 100 swings in under 5 minutes with good form. Then jump to the next bell size - usually 4 kg up. Or double up with two bells for front squats and cleans. Volume first, then load. That progression holds for all kettlebell drills.
Program kettlebell work twice a week
Two sessions a week is enough. One main day: goblet squats, swings, overhead press, and pull-ups. The second day: clean and press ladders or Turkish get-ups. Rest 60 seconds between sets and aim for consistent pace. Stick to that for 8 weeks before changing anything. Kettlebell work doesn't need complexity.

- That turns a hip hinge into a shoulder exercise and robs the movement of power. Your posterior chain never gets loaded.

- Practice a hip tap: touch the kettlebell handle to your inner thigh at the bottom, then drive your hips forward sharply.

- Picking a kettlebell that's too light.

- A light bell lets you cheat the hinge, so you never develop the snap or the core stability the move demands.

- Go heavy enough that your abs brace and your glutes fire, you should feel it there, not in your forearms.

- A death grip tenses your arms and shoulders, breaking the fluid pendulum motion and wasting energy.
- Fix
- Relax your grip to about 3/10 tension, think holding a bird that might fly away. The handle should pivot in your fingers.
