How to use fractional weight plates for progressive overload

For most home gyms, that smallest jump is 5 pounds: two 2.5s. That works fine for squats. For overhead press or curls, 5 pounds can be 10% or more of your working weight. Your body notices. Add your increment as a percentage of the bar. If it's over 3%, fractional plates earn their shelf space.
When should you actually buy fractional plates?
Buy them when a 5-pound jump stalls a lift for two weeks in a row. Not before. If you're still adding 5 pounds weekly on bench, you don't need these. Save your money. Once the bar slows, fractional plates let you add 1.25 or 0.5 pounds. That's enough stimulus to keep progress rolling without stalling recovery.
Match plate sets to your weakest lift
Look at your overhead press first. That's usually the first lift to stall. A set with 1.25, 0.625, and 0.25 pound pairs gives you flexible increments. You can combine them for 2, 3, 4 pound jumps. Skip sets that only go down to 0.5 pound. You'll want smaller options once the bar gets heavy.
Log micro-loads and stay patient for six weeks
Write down every weight you actually lift, fractions included. It's tempting to round 132.5 to 135. Don't. The log is what tells you if the next small jump is real. Stick with one increment for four to six sessions before adding more. If you miss reps, drop back a notch. Small plates reward consistency. They don't care about cleverness.

- Buy a set that includes several increments (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 kg pairs) or grab two or three pairs of the same size so you can keep the jumps coming over multiple weeks.

- Reaching for fractional plates before you've actually stalled.

- If a 2.5 kg jump still feels manageable, micro-plates just add fiddly loading time to every warm-up. Their value only shows up when a full 2.5 kg jump turns your target reps into a grind.

- Keep using normal plates until you miss the bottom of your rep range on a working set. That's the signal to drop to fractional increments.

- Grabbing the cheapest micro plates without checking the hole size or fit.
- Why
- A plate with a sloppy fit rocks and rattles during a set, and the slight shift changes your bar path. You end up spending more energy fussing with the plates than training.
- Fix
- Look for plates with a machined 2-inch bore and check the listed dimensions before buying. A lighter, well-fitting pair is worth more than a heavier set that wobbles.

- Forgetting to include the barbell's own weight when you're calculating the micro-load.
- Why
- Most barbells weigh 20 kg, and if you're tracking 'plates on the bar' instead of total weight, you'll log the wrong number. The whole point of fractional plates is precise progression, and a wrong starting point makes that precision worthless.

- Add the barbell weight to the plate total every time. On each session, log the full number, bar plus plates, so the next jump is grounded in reality.
