# Powerbuilding Program: A 4-Day Strength and Size Plan

> Updated: 2026-09-01 · Source: https://dorsi.ai/workout-plans/powerbuilding-program

Follow a four-day powerbuilding program that prioritizes squat, bench press, and deadlift performance while controlling hypertrophy volume and fatigue.

Practice the main powerlifting movements with specific strength work, then add targeted bodybuilding volume without letting accessory fatigue undermine the next main-lift session.

## Strength and size need a priority order

Powerbuilding combines two compatible goals, but it does not give every exercise equal status. The squat, bench press, and deadlift are practiced for measurable performance. Accessory lifts add muscle-focused volume around them. When the accessory work makes the next main-lift session worse, the solution is to reduce that volume rather than assume more fatigue means more progress.

The four-day schedule separates the harder squat, bench, and deadlift exposures and gives bench press a second, lighter practice day. That is enough specificity to judge the main lifts without turning every workout into a test.

## Run the block before rewriting it

Keep the main lifts and rep standards stable for the eight weeks. Add repetitions before load, use the lower-fatigue fourth week, and record effort as well as the bar weight. Constantly replacing exercises makes it impossible to tell whether the program or familiarity changed.

The [strength training program](/workout-plans/strength-training-program) is a simpler choice when strength is the only priority. The [four-day upper/lower plan](/workout-plans/4-day-upper-lower-split) is a better fit when you want balanced training without organizing the week around the powerlifts. Dorsi can use the work you complete and the time you actually have when planning future sessions; the [personalized planning page](/personalized-workout-plan) shows how those details shape the next plan.

This plan is for generally healthy adults, not meet preparation or rehabilitation. Sharp pain, fainting, chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, or persistent loss of normal function needs appropriate medical guidance.

## FAQ

### What is a powerbuilding program?
It combines specific strength practice for the squat, bench press, and deadlift with accessory work aimed at muscle growth. The main lifts keep performance measurable, while the bodybuilding work adds targeted volume without becoming the program's primary fatigue source.

### Can a beginner run this program?
A beginner can perform many of the exercises, but a simpler strength plan usually gives more practice with fewer competing goals. Powerbuilding becomes more useful after technique is stable and the lifter can judge effort and recover from added accessory volume.

### Should I test a one-repetition maximum after eight weeks?
It is optional. A controlled repetition best at a familiar load or a heavier submaximal set can show progress without the fatigue and skill demands of a maximal attempt. Competitive testing requires more individualized preparation.
